Frances

Münster

My principle
My name is Frances, I am a scientific illustrator specialized in flora and fauna. Nature has big and small wonders waiting for the world, but they are deeply hidden to us. Nevertheless, we have been sharing one and the same planet for many hundreds of centuries, which is now just as threatened as its inhabitants themselves. With my illustrations, I give these wonders the attention they are denied. I make the invisible visible: their vitality, their uniqueness, their endangerment.

My way of working
My work is characterised first and foremost by its highly realistic presentation. In order to show the motifs realistically, I study them intensively beforehand and find out about their history. Nature is colourful, even in the depths of the oceans. I reflect its diversity of shapes and colours in my illustrations. I always work analogue with brush and paper, as this is the only way to depict the dynamic colour gradients realistically – they make my motifs vitality. As a final touch, I carry out digital post-processing to increase the depth of detail.
